education.au 's EdNA Online School Education Information Officer named South Australian ICT Leader of the Year, 2004 (7 April)

Kerrie Smith, education.au's EdNA Online School Education Information Officer, has been named South Australian ICT Leader of the Year (SA) 2004 by the Computers in Education South Australia (CEGSA) group.

The award recognises a leader from outside the classroom who provides inspiration to others by their excellent practice in supporting the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to enhance and extend student learning.

Kerrie Smith then became the South Australian nominee for the Australian ICT Leader of the Year 2005 which was awarded to Tony Brandenburg, President of Information Communication Technologies Education Victoria ( ICTEV).

Kerrie has been the editor of CEGSA's quarterly journal RAMPage for five years, and Vice-President for two years. She manages the CEGSA members email list, has created an EdNA Group for CEGSA, has run the South Australian Teachers Email List (SATEL) since 1999, gives workshops at CEGSA conferences and through their professional development program, and is pioneering online professional development for them using EdNA Groups.

She was also heavily involved in planning the ACCE national conference held in Adelaide in 2004.

Kerrie was a previous winner of both the South Australian and national ICT Educator of the Year 2001 awards, as a classroom-based educator.

Originally a history and English teacher, Kerrie's love of computers began in 1986 when she and her husband bought a Commodore 128.

She completed a Graduate Diploma in Educational Computing at the University of South Australia after being asked to teach computing to a year nine class and to manage her school's computer network.

For the past four years she has been seconded from the South Australian Department of Education to work with education.au as the EdNA Online School Education Information Officer.

EdNA Online (www.edna.edu.au) is a national collaborative project of all states, territories and Australian Government and all sectors of education. It provides free web services which support the education and training community in the use of information and communication technologies.

"Kerrie Smith has done wonderful work for the EdNA project within the school education community," says Mr Gerry White, CEO of education.au, the national ICT agency which manages EdNA Online. "She is amazingly energetic in supporting teachers and librarians in the use of ICTs in education in a way that delivers enhanced outcomes for their teaching practice."

Kerrie supports a range of other services for teachers and teacher-librarians including OzProjects (ozprojects.edna.edu.au), National Software Evaluation Project (nsep.edna.edu.au), ICT Leading Practice (leadingpractice.edna.edu.au), two newsletters - Early Childhood News and edna-for-schools, and the Calendar of Australian Schools.

"There is a wealth of information for school teachers and teacher-librarians on the EdNA site," says Mr White. "This has been evaluated and collected by Kerrie Smith because of its relevance to the work of practitioners."

Kerrie is also an active participant in many online communities and associations providing information and support as necessary. She also runs an extensive program of workshops introducing EdNA's free services to the school education and training community.

"We are very proud to have Kerrie working with us on the EdNA project, and not at all surprised that her efforts should be acknowledged by CEGSA in this way," says Mr White. "Her professionalism and enthusiasm have added enormous value to what is delivered to the school education community nationally."
