Free Quiz Builder for Teachers Launched on Global Education Website (6 May)

A free Quiz Builder for teachers is now available on the Global Education website at http://globaleducation.edna.edu.au/quiz

The Quiz Builder enables teachers to construct interactive true and false multiple choice quizzes for use in the classroom. The quizzes can be edited and teachers can also make their quizzes available for other teachers to use.

The Quiz Builder enables teachers to develop a quiz to either introduce a topic, lead students to questions for further investigation, test student's knowledge and comprehension, or customise materials to fit their curriculum and students.

A sample quiz suitable for middle and upper primary students supporting the promotion of the 2004 International Year of Rice is available at http://www.globaleducation.edna.edu.au/globaled/quiz?action=publicQuiz

A sample quiz about India suitable for upper primary students is available for use at http://www.globaleducation.edna.edu.au/globaled/quiz?action=viewQuiz&quizId=11

These public quizzes use the Global Education website content as the basis for the quiz creation. Students read the content about the rice and rice growing, or the country profile of India, and then answer the related quiz questions.

The Global Education Website is funded by the Australian Agency for International Development, (AusAID) to support its Global Education Program. The objective of AusAID's Global Education Program is to increase the amount and quality of teaching on global education in Australian primary and secondary schools thereby raising awareness of international issues.

The Global Education Website was developed by education.au limited who continues to host the site and maintain and enhance the content.

The Quiz Builder has been built to conform to the IMS Question and Test Interoperability Specification (QTI).

"The Quiz Builder is a good example of how technical specifications, which are often seen as abstract, can be used to provide practical tools for teachers and learners," says Gerry White, CEO of education.au. "Use of the specification then enables us to share the quiz content with learning management systems and the like."

QTI describes how to structure question and assessment information. Conforming to the specification allows applications such as learning management systems [LMSs] to exchange tests and result information. The specification is defined in XML and contains many examples for implementers.

The QTI specification is comprehensive and covers much more than generating questions, for example, selection and ordering, outcomes processing, and results reporting. IMS also have a QTI Lite specification. QTI Lite only supports a subset of the multiple choice question type.

The education.au implementation of QTI for the Global Education website is only concerned with generating tests (which we have called quizzes as we are not storing any information such as results).

There is a considerable amount of documentation and examples for QTI and QTI Lite at www.imsglobal.org for those interested in this specification.
