A vision for the future, an education.au seminar

 

education.au’s national seminar, A vision for the future is on 2 October, at the Melbourne Docklands. Discussions around the theme of the day have already begun with the establishment of A Vision for the Future Group to engage people in conversation before and after the seminar. The current discussion topic is ‘Making 21st century connections’ – join us and share your views! There is no need to login to view the discussion posts but you need to login to contribute to the discussions.

This seminar will focus on critical issues such as:

  • What opportunities does participatory media offer education for the future?
  • What is the future of the internet beyond Web 2.0 and its impact on life and the workplace?
  • Online social networking and virtual communities – what impact do these technologies have on our future?
  • Will new technologies make a new economic system?

When: 9.30 am– 4.00 pm, 2 October 2007
Where: Atlantic Group, Shed 14 Central Pier, Melbourne Docklands.

Technology Bulletin, Issue 2

 

The Technology Bulletin provides information and updates about the technical development of the Carrick Exchange project being undertaken by education.au.

e-Framework demo – ePortfolio Wednesday, 10th October 2007

education.au staff Suzanne Curyer and Geoff Hendrick are panel members for the e-Framework session. This session will consist of ePortfolio experts, with input from the previous day's Technology in Education Open Forum, guided through the e-Framework methodology to develop a services model in the eportfolio problem space.

Do you enjoy or are you good at…?

 

Ten additional Department of Education, Science and Training “Do you enjoy or are you good at” bullseye posters are now available on myfuture. The new posters, listing occupations associated with vocational education and training (VET) topics, have been added to the 20 already available. The bullseye posters help students to understand their post-VET options and make career choices based on aptitude they demonstrate in study. The posters are currently available for download as PDFs, and will be hyperlinked to myfuture occupation profiles soon.

Australian Schools Calendar

 

The Australian Schools Calendar continues to grow in popularity as a useful resource for teachers, librarians and carers. It provides an extensive collection of significant Australian and international dates related to education, training, careers, culture and public health.

As an initiative of edna and education.au the printed calendar is undertaken in collaboration with our sponsors and the Department of Education, Science and Training.

We are now seeking sponsorship to support the creation of the 2008 version of the calendar. Further information about sponsorship levels can be obtained from Erika Dauner edauner@educationau.edu.au or from the sponsorship flyer.

Sandpit Groups upgraded

 

edna Sandpit Groups was successfully upgraded from Moodle 1.6.3 to Moodle 1.8.2 on Friday 31 August.

Among the improvements are changes to user permissions, the addition of new modules and activities, and better reporting for Group owners. edna Sandpit Groups is the place to road-test new and emerging technologies and evaluate their potential to deliver value for education.

Research Quality Framework specifications released

 

The final specifications for the 2008 Research Quality Framework (RQF) have been released. The RQF Submission Specifications and the RQF Technical Specifications provide Australian universities with rules and guidance for submitting research for assessment under the RQF.

Assessment panel members for Research Quality Framework

 

The membership of the 13 assessment panels for the Research Quality Framework (RQF) has been selected. The assessment panels will assess the Evidence Portfolios of Research Groups submitted by higher education providers as part of the RQF assessment process in 2008, and will award a rating for quality and impact.

Each Panel comprises 12 members representing higher education providers, industry, business, government and community organisations and the international research sector.

Summer schools for our best teachers

 

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP announced the successful providers of Summer Schools and called for teacher applications for the 2008 Australian Government Summer Schools for Teachers initiative.

Up to 1,000 of Australia’s best teachers will have the opportunity to attend an all expenses paid ten day residential course to enhance their training in one of five areas, literacy and numeracy, English, mathematics, science and Australian history.

Finance 2006 - Financial reports of Higher Education providers

 

This publication contains adjusted financial statements for higher education providers (HEPs) for the 2006 reporting period. The data was extracted from audited financial statements and provided to the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) in 2007. The adjusted financial statements are presented in a format similar to that outlined in the Department’s Financial Statement Guidelines for Australian Higher Education Providers for the 2006 Reporting Period.

Thinking beyond numbers: Learning numeracy for the future workplace

 

The use, learning and transfer of workplace numeracy skills, as well as current understandings of the term numeracy, are examined in this study. It also highlights the importance of numeracy as an essential workplace skill. The report challenges the training system and training organisations to provide numeracy training which makes links directly to workplace contexts as well as to mathematical concepts.

Community adult language, literacy and numeracy provision in Australia: Diverse approaches and outcomes

 

This study examined non-accredited community language, literacy and numeracy provision in Australia. A diverse range of providers assist many adults who do not need or cannot yet cope with accredited training. Growth in self-confidence appears as important as development of literacy and numeracy skills, with teachers and tutors playing a key role in this.

$2.5 million to provide national coverage of World Youth Day

 

SBS will receive $2.5 million in Australian Government funding to assist with comprehensive national coverage of World Youth Day. World Youth Day is the largest youth event in the world and aims to gather young people from around the world and build bridges of friendship and hope between continents, peoples and cultures.

The SBS coverage will include:

  • comprehensive live TV coverage of major World Youth Day events and services
  • ‘Live Sites’ in capital cities across the country
  • radio coverage including ‘in-language’ coverage
  • significant online coverage and related activities
  • the acquisition and commissioning of additional television content for broadcast before, during and immediately after World Youth Day, focusing on programming by, for and about youth.

What matters about innovation?

 

A summary of a collection of strategies to assist organisations overcome the challenges of integrating innovative technology into their teaching and training processes has been published. what matters – innovate and integrate reviews research findings, identifies potential obstacles to innovation and outlines steps that can ease the introduction and integration of technology into education and training organisations.

New OPEL project underway

 

A funding agreement for a new national high speed broadband network has been signed with OPEL Networks, a joint venture between rural group Elders and Optus. The OPEL network will deliver high-speed broadband to rural households and small businesses at comparable to the competitive prices enjoyed by metropolitan Australians.

Further $7.6 million investment in Higher Education

 

The national government has provided funding of $7.6 million for 11 innovative projects that will support universities to diversify and to provide high quality education.

These projects, funded through the Collaboration and Structural Reform Fund (CASR), will promote structural reform in higher education and encourage stronger links between universities and industry, business, the local community, education and training providers.

Indigenous and Early years catalogues on TLF website

 

You can now access catalogues for Indigenous and Early years online curriculum content developed by The Le@rning Federation (TLF) from the website.

The Indigenous catalogue is a sample of online curriculum content with an Indigenous perspective, or contains Indigenous content. It illustrates the range of material developed by TLF and available for free to all schools in Australia and New Zealand.

The Early Years catalogue contains learning objects designed to support teaching and learning in the early years of schooling. It includes the curriculum areas of Mathematics and numeracy, Science, Studies of Australia and Business and enterprise.
