The Strategic ICT Advisory Service (SICTAS) was funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Education Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
Purpose
The primary purpose of SICTAS was to undertake a series of studies in a broad range of areas to investigate the current and future impacts of emerging technologies and to provide strategic advice to assist policy makers to address the implications of implementation of new technologies in education and training.
The target audience for this research is senior policy advisors in the Australian Government as well as State and Territory government departments.
The work of SICTAS
During 2008 – 2009, SICTAS conducted a range of activities that investigated the implications of implementing new technologies in education and training, facilitating input and testing of investigation outcomes and strategic advice across all educational sectors and all jurisdictions.
The work of SICTAS consisted of:
1. An Investigative Research Program
The investigative research program encompassed a broad range of areas of investigation.
The key investigations included:
- Collaboration in Teaching and Learning
- Education Workplace capability
- e-portfolios
- National software infrastructure
2. A National Think Tank
SICTAS convened a national strategic Think Tank as a forum for considering emerging technologies and their implications for education and training.
The Think Tank enabled leading thinkers from industry, stakeholder groups, government and other relevant agencies to inform the strategic advice that SICTAS provided.
The Think Tank incorporated a number of activities including:
- three online Tankettes
- national Symposium
3. Annual Report on Emerging Technologies
The final piece of work for SICTAS in 2008 – 2009 was an annual report on emerging technologies This report brought together findings from a number of sources including:
- high level findings from the investigative research program
- work of the Tankette Convention
- output from the Symposium
- additional investigation of emerging technologies.
The Annual report presents a futures thinking overview of emerging technologies and the implications for policy makers and addresses issues related to emerging technologies including their impact on education and training, the business case for adoption and associated opportunities, risks and challenges.
